Hair Coated Dogs

A ‘Hair-Coated Dog’ describes breeds that grow hair instead of fur. This hair grows like human head hair and must be bathed, combed and trimmed regularly to avoid matting and skin issues such as hot spots. It can be curly, wavy or straight. It does not shed, nor have an undercoat. While hair and fur are the same makeup under a microscope, a hair-coat has one layer of continuously growing hair. Some examples of hair-coated breeds are the Shih-Tzu, Havanese, Bearded Collie, Old English Sheep Dog,

Services & Pricing - Doodles

Doodles are Special

So many Doodles and they’re all different! One thing all Doodles have in common is that they are a mixed-coat breed and therefore must be priced in custom format. Doodles come in three noted sizes; however, those standard sizes change depending on the non-poodle part of the mix. For example, a medium Bernadoodle might be twice the size (and often is) of a medium Goldendoodle. Doodles are also a mix of coats, so there is a shedding double-coat mixed with a continuously growing hair coat.

Whether it’s an F1b, an F2b or a Double Doodle – you cannot predict what kind of coat it will have. Groomers are the coat type pros and can tell you that every type of mixed-coat doodle has the chance of shedding as much as it does to not shed.  The base pricing is the same as above; however, they often require extra brushing, or are the most likely breed mix to be shaved due to pelted (or severely matted) coats. This is ONLY done with the family's knowledge and if there is no other alternative.

It is the humane way to deal with pelted coats. With many combined years of experience since the onset in Doodle popularity, plus constant upgrades in our personal education we have huge success in designing custom routines and schedules for keeping your Doodles fluffy, healthy and matt-free by working with you and your lifestyle. We at The Parlour are happy to discuss the best way to keep these sweet dogs comfortable and maintained at home between professional grooms to keep everyone happy!

Services & Pricing - Double Coat Breed

Double Coat Breeds

A “Double-Coat” describes breeds with 2 layers of hair that stops growing after a predetermined length, like our eyelashes or eyebrows.  The 1st layer, or TOPCOAT, is the hair responsible for the shine, and gorgeous colour assigned to the breed or mix.  This topcoat does not shed and therefore cannot be clipped as it could take up to a year, if ever, to grow back.

Undercoat

The 2nd layer, or UNDERCOAT, is shedding hair – you know that hair most family members could do without!  There is a softer type of hair that falls out in flyaway tufts as needed for warmth and protection.  This coat is closest to the skin and acts as an insulator against irritants, keeping in warmth when needed and releasing when the dog is too warm OR under stress.

Shedding

It is important to know that these breeds always shed but tend to have certain times of the year when they “blow their coat” - usually late Spring and again just before the temperature drops.  We at The Parlour will not clip any double coated dog unless medically necessary at our discretion.

Trimming

Please note we will happily trim “furnishings” - the dangling hair on the back legs, top of feet, around the back end, tail and ears.  In these areas the topcoat grows beyond the undercoat and therefore does not pose any risk to the dog’s well-being.

Which Dog?

Some examples of double-coated breeds are Golden Retrievers and Labs, all Sheperds from German Sheperds to Australian Shepard, Pomeranians, Short and Long-Haired Chihuahuas, Collies (not including Bearded Collie), Newfoundlands, etc.  If you are unsure of your dog’s coat type, just ask any one of the Parlour Ladies.

     Small:      $50+ (+$10 for trimming)
